The Fashion Books

Books will never go out of style to me. Fashion books are especially appealing for the coffee table and for cold days with a cup of tea. I wanted to make a list of my favorites to share with you.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty – Whether or not you saw the his exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you’ll be a fan of this book. The designer was a visionary. His work was both influential and controversial, and this book catalogues it all beautifully.

Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington – If you haven’t seen the movie The September Issue (a behind the scenes look at Vogue‘s biggest issue), watch before reading. Coddington is brilliant, likable, graceful. Trust me, you’ll want to know more about the woman behind much of Vogue‘s creative direction.

Influence by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen – I confess that I bought this book the day it was released. Yes, I love the Olsens, but the book isn’t a tribute to them. Instead MK and A take on the role of author by interviewing designers like Diane Von Furstenberg ,Karl Lagerfeld, and Christian Louboutin. They interview everyone from journalists to set designers and results are inspiring. Yes, there are still pictures of the Olsens, but don’t be so highbrow that you can’t take away some awe from the fashion heroes they interview.

Avedon Fashion 1944-2000 by Richard Avedon – What’s fashion without the photographer? Avedon is arguably the most famous fashion photographer of all time. He was the first to photograph a black woman for Harper’s Bazaar. He changed the way people looked at fashion, making social commentary through his images. Don’t just take my word for it, enjoy his beautiful images and the three essays in the book.

CR Fashion Book by Carine Roitfeld – Okay, this isn’t actually a book. Roitfeld left her role as editor of French Vogue and this is her new publication. Spend the $30 and be delighted and surprised twice a year by its delivery.
