My Favorite Styling Tricks – Women’s Edition.

The scarf as a vest, belt, headwrap, etc. The scarf is the most versatile item in your wardrobe. Use it. A boring outfit is instantly more exciting when you tie a scarf into the mix. Google different ways to tie and take inspiration from the perfect looks below.

Proportions are so important. A coat should never be more than a few inches longer or shorter than a dress, or else it needs to be drastically different. When you wear a maxi, you need a cropped coat (or else a floor length one). When you’re wearing a mini, you need a coat that hits to the hem or a bit longer. Any coat goes with jeans, so rejoice for that!

Figure out whether it looks best tucked, tied, rolled, or left alone. The half tuck (first picture below) isn’t often noticeable to the untrained style eye, but it makes a vast difference in showing off your waist line. It should look easy and relaxed. If you want a polished look, tuck it all the way in and add a belt. The tie up is tough. In many cases, I think it looks too retro. If you’re going for retro, then pair it with high waisted styles. If retro isn’t your look, reserve the tied button up for the beach.

Details are everything. If you have on a wow piece, play up the details of the cut of the shirt or its embellishments. If your base look for the day is boring (this coming from a girl who cannot buy enough gray t-shirts) then you need accessories that say “I put thought into this look”. To really be a style star, you always need to be wearing at least one piece that you adore, that gets compliments and starts conversations, that shows you’re not just wearing clothes because you must.

One more thing! The French say, if you’re wearing a dress above the knee, wear flats. If you’re wearing a dress below the knee, wear heels. I think it’s a pretty good rule of thumb. But then again, I’ve broken all the fashion rules out there.
