New Year’s Resolution Ideas (that don’t involve hitting the gym).

Be more mindful, and step away from social media. Most of our down time these days involves scrolling through an endless stream of instagram pictures and twitter comments. Sometimes, we really need to hit the off button and connect with ourselves and those around us. I’m fine with morning emails, and clearly I’m not against technology. However, I’m making a pact to shut off my phone a few nights a week.

Stop allowing fear to guide you. This one is hard for me. It’s easy to say that fear is something other than it is (i.e. any time you think “I’m not good enough,” that’s actually fear of failure). Fear stops us from doing a lot of things that we’d really like to do. Starting a business, learning a new sport, even going to the gym. Fear of looking stupid or not being great at something cripples us before we even begin. Look fear in the face and say, “I know what you are, and I’m not going to let you rule me.”

Lighten up. One of the most endearing qualities in a person is being able to laugh at oneself. Not everything has to be dramatic. There’s a certain grace required in being able to see the world for the big picture and keeping a light heart. It makes for both a positive attitude and others will be drawn to your good vibes.

Keep in touch. There’s nothing like receiving real mail or catching up with an old friend over coffee. Every year as we settle into our adult lives, it requires a little more effort to keep our friendships alive and well. Make sure that you let people know how important they are to you. Send a note, make a date, and keep relationships a top priority in a hectic life.

Keep dreaming big. Your mind is your most powerful asset. It’s okay to fall into a wardrobe or workout slump, but get back on the wagon. Think good thoughts, dream big dreams, and then plan small steps to achieve them. A lot happens in a year of our lives and change comes whether we ask for it or not. Embrace it and keep working to be the person that you want to be.

Happy New Year, everyone. Thanks for a great 2014. I can’t wait to see what the next one will bring.
