Ciao Bella: Traveling in Style

The reasons to travel to Italy are as varied as the gelato flavors. Some people go to get a taste of history while others take part in the outdoor activities. For me, Italy is all about the fashion and the indulgences! From food to wine to life, Italians do it best. They know how to eat, they know how to dress, and they know how to party. So if you’re ready for the ride of your life you need to know about traveling in style to the motherland.

Carbohydrates. It is a fact that women crave carbs more than men. So why not satisfy those cravings with lasagna, bread, pizza, and pasta? Italians tend to eat bread with every meal. Make sure to pack some dark colors and flowy tops or dresses to stay comfortable. The worst thing possible during a meal is spilling that delicious San Marzano sauce on your white blouse.

Gelato. It is a crime not to love Italian ice cream. Hopefully you left room for dessert after a carb-heavy meal of lasagna. Gelaterias in Italy are like bridges in Pittsburgh; they’re everywhere! It is very difficult to smell the freshly made cones and not be tempted to step inside. If you can spare the room, make your decision easy and get a couple scoops. Nutella and Stracciatella are my favorite. Ready for a relaxing afternoon? Throw on a sundress and hike to town for a nice gelato in the piazza.

Packing. Italian women dress effortlessly chic without a lot of fuss. So color coordinate your outfits, add a lightweight accent piece, be polished, and all will be well. Stylish flats will be your best friend in Italy. If you must wear heels, choose wedges! Heels are beautiful, but they will get stuck in the cobblestones. Try to stay away from shorts. Italian women dress more feminine and you will feel odd in shorts unless you are biking or on a beach.

Shopping. This is by far my favorite part of Italy and the most essential topic for traveling in style. The leather boots and purses in Florence, along with an emerging fashion scene, will satisfy any shopaholics urge. There are great little boutiques with unique treasures and also plenty of street vendors to pursue. Prada, Versace, Gucci, and a thousand other designers make their home in Italy. Make sure to leave extra space in your bag for all of the chic clothes you will impress your friends with back home.
