A to Z Guide: Fashion Week Rules

With fashion week in full swing descending on Manhattan, I hope you have been taking in all of the runway shows. That being said, I thought I would share some of my favorite fashion week rules to keep in mind.

So if you’re clueless when it comes to designer fashion, here is an A to Z guide on the essentials. Or even if you’re a style expert and can spell “Giambattista Valli” in your sleep, you will still appreciate freshening up on the basics.

A – Appearances. It is always important to keep up with appearances. Kanye West’s next installment of Yeezy Season will debut during NYFW. This is his third consecutive appearance at the event.

B – Bundle Up. Lines snake around the outside of the majority of the venues, so for February, you’re going to need to wear some seriously chic layers and ultra warm boots. One can only hope there will be a coat check.

C – Comfortable shoes. Getting from show to show at NYFW isn’t easy, and trying to do it in your highest heels won’t make it any easier. Luckily, sneakers and flats are more in line with current trends than ever.

D – Diversity. In past years, Fashion Week has gotten poor feedback for not featuring enough diversity on the runway. This season there will be more of a representation of different ethnicities and more plus-sized models.

E – Events. Kendall + Kylie Jenner’s launch party was held three days before the start of NYFW to be taken seriously by the fashion community.

F – Fur as fur. The traditional mink coat as worn by conventional ladies circa the forties to eighties is back!

G – Gift Bags. It isn’t uncommon for designers to leave gift bags on the seats for attendees to take home after a show. Sometimes they will have goodies like beauty products, accessories or little treats.

H – Hudson Yards. As more designers leave Lincoln Center, is it too early to start daydreaming about the next potential Fashion Week hub at Hudson Yards?

I – Invitations. Fashion Week isn’t like the Super Bowl where anyone can buy a ticket if they’re willing to pay enough money. It’s an industry event, meaning that everyone with an invite is somehow directly connected to the fashion industry: stylists, buyers, editors, reporters, celebrities, etc.

J – Jams. Make sure to check out all of the DJ’s and latest tracks featured during the runway shows.

K – Kimono. Designers are bringing the kimono to NYFW. Will kimono become a recognized universal formal wear? With designs like the ones being shown, I think so!

L – Location, Location, Location! New York Fashion Week runs from February 10th through 18th and the central hub for NYFW is Manhattan.

M – Madeline Stuart. Down syndrome model Madeline is set to return to the NYFW runway.

N – Nibble. Ladurée opened its second store in Soho, perfect for a sugar rush between shows.

O – Olympics. Fashion Month isn’t the only endurance sport happening in February. The Winter Olympics also kicked off on February 7th.

P – Press Week. The first Fashion Week took place in 1943 during World War II. Magazines took notice and the institution was born.

Q – Queens. Anna Wintour,  Kim France, and Joanna Coles. Need I say more? Know who these powerhouses are!

R – Retrograde. Any thoughts? Mercury goes into retrograde the same day Fashion Month kicks off. Make sure you back up your data!

S – Seating. There is definitely a hierarchy of seating at Fashion Week. Celebrities are always seated front row, as are editors for all the major fashion magazines. You will never see Sarah Jessica Parker or Anna Wintour in the second row.

T – Tweets. Finally, your phone addiction pays off! Retweets and Facebook posts will work as currency at certain locations. Make sure your Twitter game is strong!

U – Uber. Special promotions and discounts will be going on during Fashion Week. Why walk when you can be driven?

V – Victoria Beckham. Her collection never disappoints. I cannot wait to get some of her latest dresses!

W – Winter boots. It’s been a white winter indeed, with several inches in New York lately. The best armor to prepare is a sturdy Sorel boot, or the famous Ugg boots.

X- X-rated, so to speak. Most of the inspired looks are sheer with hints of nudes and bare skin giving that added feminine edge.

Y – You. The revolution is here when this season is all about you. This trend has come to fashion in a big way. This is the era of your style. Your look. Your body type.

Z – Zen Out. There is perhaps no better time to treat yourself than at the close of a very hectic week. Head to the spa. Go fourth and relax. You’ve earned it.
